Plant-based vegan dairy products like milk, cheese, sour cream, yogurt, ice cream and more are having a huge impact on the entirety of the cruel dairy industry and the latest report from the Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) reinforces that.
The DFA reported that in 2018 the industry plummeted a staggering 1.1 billion dollars. The statistics revealed by DFA shows that the industry made 14.7 billion in 2017 and 13.6 billion in 2018.
That more than 1 billion dollar loss is an 8 percent overall drop that is yet another nail in the coffin for an industry of extreme cruelty that in Wisconsin alone is closing 2 dairy farms a day.
Plant-based vegan dairy sales have skyrocketed in all western countries including the UK where vegan dairy sales are now three times larger than the traditional mammary fluid milk.
It’s no wonder vegan dairy is wrecking the traditional industry with studies like this one that is the largest and most comprehensive study showing the connection between dairy and the diseases it causes.
The Dairy Farmers of America, of course, say that veganism and the plant-based dairy alternatives don’t affect their industry while behind the scenes they grease the palms of politicians through their lobbyists in Washington.
They are pushing for bills to ban vegan products from using the words “milk”, “yogurt” or “cheese” under the guise of consumer protection (because we’d all be too confused apparently).
They tried to blame low milk prices but that’s a farce when you consider that the dairy industry has been kept on financial life support since WWII through government subsidies.
With U.S. dairy farmers dumping over 43 million gallons of milk during the pandemic it’s clearly looking like their unsustainable industry will have an even more stark report for 2019 much like the “beef” cattle industry is reporting with their $13 billion dollar loss because of the virus too.
According to a report from Mintel a research firm, the plant-based milk industry has grown by over 61% in the last five years.
It has been such a fast rise to the top for traditional dairy alternatives that many brands like Oatly (who specializes in vegan ice cream) have had repeated shortages trying to meet consumer demand.
The dairy industry’s reaction is to both deny the success of plant-based dairy alternatives and its impact on their industry while simultaneously attempting to use government legislation to implement the aforementioned bans on words like milk.
Executive director of the Plant Based Food Association (A vegan lobby group) Michele Simon has said in response:
“In an era of increasing innovation in the food industry, this legislation would send a chilling message to small and emerging businesses: The marketplace is rigged against you in favor of large and powerful special interests.”
“This mean-spirited bill would harm innovative plant-based food companies that are growing rapidly, providing new, great-tasting options for consumers. This bill would declare the free market dead with the promotion of protectionist policies pushed by dairy-state politicians and their lobbyists.”
With the plant-based vegan dairy market worth around $17.3 billion dollars globally and predicted to hit $29.6 billion in just three years from now in 2023 it’s easy to see why the dairy industry is attempting to stop what is inevitable.
