Animal Agriculture “News” Claims Plant Based Vegan Burgers Will Make Men Grow Breasts

Tri-State Livestock News is using the old tried and true nonsense that men will grow breasts if they consume soy and soy derived products. This alarmist “news” follows the ubiquitous popularity of plant based vegan meat alternatives like the Beyond Meat Beyond Burger or the Impossible Foods Impossible Whopper.

Despite many in the animal ag flesh industry coming out with their own plant based meats (like Smithfield Foods has done) the industry as a whole has declared war on the burgeoning new plant based meat industry that is expected to reach 140 billion dollars a year by 2030. In that same decade Animal Ag is expected to collapse with dairy falling first.

Those against plant based meats point out that it’s “ultra processed” even making comparisons to dog food. Now they’ve dug up the old claim that men will grow boobs eating these meat alternatives.

The Tri-State Livestock News has claimed eating Burger King’s new Impossible Whopper could cause men to grow breasts. James Stangle a veterinarian doctor in South Dakota is quoted in their “news” piece as saying:

“The impossible whopper has 44mg of estrogen and the whopper has 2.5ng of estrogen. Now let me refresh your metric system. There are 1 million nanograms (ng) in one milligram (mg). That means an impossible whopper has 18 million times as much estrogen as a regular whopper. Just six glasses of soy milk per day has enough estrogen to grow boobs on a male. That’s the equivalent of eating four impossible whoppers per day. You would have to eat 880 pounds of beef from an implanted steer to equal the amount of estrogen in one birth control pill.”

In the veterinarian doctors article that has been picked up and repeated by right wing conservative “news” outlets like MichaelSavage.com and National File he lays out the same old unscientific claim that soy based foods will “feminize” men. He stops short of ranting about “soy boys” which is a common anti vegan slur the right loves to invoke in these situations.

“In short, the Impossible Burger is a genetically modified organism filled with calorie-dense oils that can make a man grow breasts if eaten in sufficient quantity,” Tom Pappert, editor in chief of the National File, concluded.

They erroneously base their claims on the fact that soy contains a high concentration of isoflavones that can act like estrogen within our bodies but are nowhere near the strength of the actual sex hormone estrogen.

The consumption of isoflavones and soy itself in unaltered form has been studied exhaustively through the decades and out of the thousands of studies there’s no evidence that it causes men to grow breast tissue even in abnormal amounts. It has however been shown to protect against different cancers, easing menopause, preventing heart disease and may even help with cognition when aging. See some of those findings here and also here.

Then there are the studies that have looked into whether isoflavones can feminize men and infants and interfere with fertility and development. The general concern goes back decades The American Academy of Pediatrics has concluded that “soy protein-based formulas are a safe and nutritionally equivalent alternative to cow milk-based formula for term infants whose nutritional needs are not met from breast milk.”

There’s no proof of their alarmist claims and a quick google search will show thousands of studies refuting these absurd claims. The market for breast implants wouldn’t exist if all we had to do was eat soy to grow breast tissue.

Does soy give you moobs?

No, thousands of studies have shown that soy is completely safe and does not cause anyone to grow breast tissue.

Does soy have estrogen?

Soy is unique in that it contains a high concentration of isoflavones, a type of plant estrogen (phytoestrogen) that is similar in function to human estrogen but with much weaker effects.

Does soy really increase estrogen levels?

Soy beans and soy products are the richest source of isoflavones in the human diet. While isoflavones may act like estrogen they also have antiestrogen properties.

Is soy healthy?

Eating soy foods is not only safe, it provides a good source of quality protein, lowers the risk of heart disease, lowers the risk of many types of cancer and helps with weight management.
