The Washington Avenue Business Improvement District (BID) in South Beach Miami Florida wanted to have horse-drawn carriage rides for the holidays but thankfully that will no longer be happening.

It was announced on social media and a now removed Eventbrite page. The event was supposed to start on December 19th and continue into the 31st.

Residents and local animal rights activists were outraged including Sarah Velasquez.

“It’s almost 2020, there’s no reason to have animals as a source of entertainment. It’s just wrong.” she said of the plans

Velasquez contacted the commissioners and city manager through email when the event came to her attention, asking them to cancel their approval. The BID did, of course, cancel the barbaric event posting on Facebook that:

The BID is”sensitive to the care and fair treatment of animals” and decided the horse-drawn carriage rides were “not in the best interest of the Washington Avenue Business Improvement District.”

Velasquez went on to say:

“We have a beautiful city with beautiful animals around us,” Velasquez says. “We should be able to protect them and respect them.”

Horse-drawn carriages are being either outright banned across the United States or regulated out of existence. It’s a good thing for both the safety of passengers and the safety of these innocent animals that have no place in the traffic of a modern city.

There is no reason for this antiquated and barbaric practice to continue for “fun” or “entertainment”. The modern automobile is going electric for Pete’s sake! Horses were used for transportation of people and goods for centuries and it’s time they get to have their rest.

Horses belong in the wild living their own lives free to roam, love, and experience a life of unbound freedom not stuck breaking their backs and joints for humans that don’t even need them anymore. We have a responsibility to our fellow earthlings to do better and it starts with each of us protesting and winning events like this.
