The first vegan Happy Meal certified by The Vegan Society is about to launch just in time for Veganuary! While last year saw the same “Veggie Dippers” launched in the UK this time it will be prepared separately from their animal products.
A delicious red pepper, rice, split pea and tomato pesto strip shaped like a traditional Mickey D’s chicken strip is served with fries and a drink.
“In the last 12 months we’ve seen an 80% uplift in customers ordering vegetarian options at McDonald’s,” said Thomas O’Neill, Head of Food Marketing at McDonald’s UK & Ireland. “So it is time for the brand famous for the dippable McNugget to launch a dippable option for our vegetarian, vegan and flexitarian customers.”
“The Veggie Dippers are a delicious addition to our menu,” continued O-Neill. “We’re looking forward to seeing what customers make of our first vegan Extra Value Meal and Happy Meal in the New Year.”
This is the first truly vegan McDonald’s meal launched in the UK but back in September McDonald’s had a successful test launch in 28 Canadian locations of their P.L.T. burger made in collaboration with Beyond Meat as well as previous years they’ve tested vegan sandwiches in Germany and Finland.
Vegan and plant based fast food is spreading rapidly throughout the world especially in the UK and the United States. Burger King launched their Impossible Whopper at all 7,000 plus U.S. locations this year only months after a blow out test in the St. Louis area, while KFC has experimented with vegan fried chicken in Atlanta over the summer and recently in Canada selling out at both in mere hours.
The new Veggie Dippers meal will cost £4.99 starting January 2nd and should sell out quickly especially since it launches during Veganuary, the biggest vegan month of the year where pre vegans try out a plant based diet as a new years resolution for 30 days.
