Over 14,000 sheep spilled into the Black Sea just off the cost of Romania drowning thousands of animals. The live export industry which crams animals by the thousands onto boats with no food or water for long periods of time is well known to kill many on the voyages of hell these animals endure.

The ship (The Queen Hind) capsized for unknown reasons not soon after departing from Romania’s Midia port on their way to Saudi Arabia the BBC reported. The crew consisting of 20 Syrians and one Lebanese man were rescued along with 32 sheep swimming around the sunken vessel. The BBC reported one member of the crew was hospitalized because of hypothermia.

Local government agencies have attempted to save the ship with recovery efforts to return it to shore but the efforts have not yet succeeded. The wreck still contains thousands of sheep trapped and in danger of drowning while authorities continue recovery efforts.

Romania’s ACEBOP a livestock industry group said an investigation needs to occur to determine what happened.

“Our association is shocked by the disaster,” ACEBOP President Mary Pana said in a statement. “If we cannot protect livestock during long-distance transports, we should outright ban them.”

The third largest breeder of sheep in the EU and THE largest exporter of sheep within the EU mostly to the middle east Romania has a lot to lose with this incident putting more pressure on the horrendous live export industry.

Animal Rights Activists are speaking out against the inhumane conditions these animals and others go through in this live export practice.

“We need to move away from live export, which traumatizes millions of animals each year, in order to prevent tragedies like this.” said Alesia Soltanpanah, the executive director of World Animal Protection US, in a statement to USA TODAY.

Activists are reportedly on the scene attempting to rescue sheep that can live out their lives safe at a sanctuary. Stay tuned Vegan News will keep you up to date on any new information.
