.

President Trump with the stroke of a pen on Monday signed a bill into law that makes animal cruelty federally illegal in all 50 states. He stated the bill would help us be “more responsible and humane stewards of our planet.”

The Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture act or “PACT act” was a bipartisan effort that cleared the senate in the beginning of November expands on a previous bill signed into law by President Obama back in 2010.

“It is important that we combat these heinous and sadistic acts of cruelty.” Trump said.

Animal fighting was the only criminalized animal cruelty that had to have been recorded and sold on video to be covered under federal law previous to this new bill. The new PACT Act makes burning, suffocating, impaling, drowning, crushing, or sexually interacting with animals a federal crime complete with up to seven years in prison, fines and felony charges.

While all 50 states have some kind of laws to protect animals within their individual states this sweeping new bill gives the federal government incredible power to come down hard on those who would harm innocent beings.

The law unfortunately does contain exception for hunting and other hunting related activities like trapping.
